Chennai Super Kings' IPL 2026 playoffs hope ended with a record defeat to Gujarat Titans and their captain was also slapped with a heavy fine.

Chennai Super Kings suffered the heaviest defeat in their IPL history after a meek surrender to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Thursday night. GT handed CSK an 89-run thrashing to secure their ninth win of the ongoing season and thus ensured they will finish among the top two of the IPL points table.

If the margin of defeat was not deflating enough, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad faced further punishment from the BCCI after the five-time champions were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

This was the second time this season that CSK breached the over-rate rules. As a result, Gaikwad was fined Rs 24 lakh, while the rest of the squad, including Impact Player Kartik Sharma, were fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever was lower.

In a must-win encounter, CSK opted to bowl first but ended up conceding 229/4, with GT openers Sai Sudharsan (84) and Shubman Gill (64) smashing commanding half-centuries. The pair stitched together a 125-run opening partnership before being separated.

No. 3 batter Jos Buttler built on the solid foundation and hammered a blistering unbeaten 57 off 27 balls to propel GT to a massive total. CSK used six bowlers, but only Gurjapneet Singh maintained an economy rate below eight runs per over. Anshul Kamboj proved the most expensive, leaking 56 runs in his four overs.

CSK’s chase began disastrously, with the in-form Sanju Samson departing for a golden duck after Mohammed Siraj had him caught behind off the very first ball of the innings. CSK never recovered from the early setback, with only Shivam Dube showing some resistance through a quickfire 47 off 17 balls before GT wrapped up a comfortable victory.

In a collective bowling effort, Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan picked up three wickets each as CSK were skittled for 140 in just 13.4 overs.

This is the third consecutive season in which CSK have failed to qualify for the playoffs.
